Boost Me Up by Tyler Bell

Josh Kerr wins the Boost SurfSho, Bondi Beach

If you were in Bondi over the weekend, chances are you managed to get down to the beach and watch a few heats at the Boost Mobile SurfSho. Bondi delivered – though it was small, there were cross-shore ramps on offer and the sun was smiling. After the premiere for his biopic, The Kerrazy Kronicles, held at White Revolver nightclub on Saturday night, Josh Kerr managed to push through the hangover and milk enough outta the the small Bondi runners to overcome Jack Freestone (who was leading the final) and pocket the $25k prize-purse.

Thanks to the nature of the air show format and the possibility of not managing to find one ramp in 20 minutes, the Boost SurfSho is one of the few contests where contestants like Jordy Smith, Owen Wright, Mitch Coleborn and Craig Anderson can score zero points in a heat (which they all did yesterday). The margin is huge in that respect – in the final, neither Jordy or Owen clocked a scoring ride, while Jules Wilson pulled 7.23, Jacky Freestone 8 points and the winner, Kerzy, handling a solid 9 points.

Film premiere and $25k in the pocket? Not a bad weekend for Josh Kerr.
