I have spent many days in the Lacanau car park idling under the scorching sun waiting for heats. The gutters always reek of urine and the waves are usually tiny.
But the following week everything changes. We are back in Hossegor.
God I love this place.
Waves, women and night life.
All the boys are in town.
They paddle out at the same time. The period is short, the wind is onshore and there are nuggets to be had.

Mike Ness goes Antiquing
During downtime at this year's Austin City Limits festival, Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness took the opportunity to cruise South Austin where he enjoys shopping at quirky antique and oddity stores, including the famed Off the Wall. While shopping for mantlepieces and miscellanea, Ness conceded that there's a reason it takes Social Distortion so long between albums – they all have lives outside the band. For him, that means family. But the one feeds the other, as life inspires art.
"It's been – and still continues to be – a very poignant spot in my life right now," he tells Rolling Stone. Raising his kids has been transformative if not always easy. "It's like looking in a mirror," he says. "That's fucking painful sometimes. And we had to climb a couple mountains to get to this point – the whole family."
But, as he discusses in this video interview, it's only led to higher ground...and a lot of fertile songwriting sessions along the way.

Arto’s Pool Party
When you’ve got your own skateable pool in your backyard, it’s only right to share the wealth. Arto Saari did just that at his Los Angeles home recently. The backyard bash went off complete with a barbecue and lights, late into the night. This is what I'm talking about...these ones don't have the fake tan and hair gel.
This video recently came to light of a bunch of surfers at a crowded esplanade in Jersey trying to make the most of the waves Irene threw northwards. The guys make a mad dash past the cops, who had the beach on locked-down. It’s almost like something out of Point Break, when Bodhi paddles out during the 50 year storm … do you reckon the cops were shouting out above the sound of rain and crashing waves "We'll get him when he gets back in!" (minus the crap fake Aussie accents)?
