You Are Here - Reubyn Ash [surfing mag]
“My goal is to be the David Beckham of surfing,” Reubyn Ash tells me. He’s got better teeth than most English, but I’m still not sure what he means. I don’t really watch soccer. Or, uh, football. But that’s just beginning of things I don’t understand.
Reubyn has a surfboard worth a million dollars. He’s just landed an aerial that no one’s ever seen. And he calls other European pros “bloody boring.”
“But don’t print that,” he tells me.
He’s drinking a Monster Energy drink. His eyes are bright and excited. Back in England he’s something of a nature boy. Local hippie. Save the whales. He writes off competitive surfing, but he’s also won every division of the UK tour and twice been European champion. Back in Cornwall, he’s kind of a big deal. But out in the rest of a world, well, as Reubyn puts it, “They couldn’t take a piss.” So Reubyn’s trying to find another means of accomplishing his goal. I dig deeper:
“Can I see your million-dollar surfboard?”
“No.”
“How about just a picture of it.”
“Sorry, I can’t. I’m not supposed to ruin the surprise.”
“Okay. Well, what’s a million-dollar surfboard look like?”
“It’s got art on it.”
“Art?”
“You know, colors and shit. Innit.”
“What makes it worth a million dollars then?”
“The art was painted by Damien Hirst,” he says. “He’s pretty much the highest paid artist in the world right now. The guy writes his name with a pen that pen becomes worth a thousand quid.”
“What’s a quid?”
Reubyn says stuff like “innit” and “cup a tea.” He has “quids” in his pockets. He kinda sounds like Ali G., but maybe that’s because I don’t know any English surfers.
“So what is this maneuver you invented?” I ask.
“I can’t tell you,” he says.
Wow, this interview is really going nowhere.
.......
SURFING: Who’s the second most famous freesurfer in Europe — after yourself?
Reubyn Ash: No one. There’s no one else doing this.
What do you mean by “the David Beckham of surfing?”
I want to be a household name in Europe. Surfing’s getting bigger than just the brands, and I think the high-performance stuff if what people want to see, innit? Beckham wasn’t necessarily the best surfer — he just had that one goal in the World Cup. The rest was just good marketing.
And you can accomplish that through freesurfing?
I do contests, too. But in Europe especially, it’s all just three turns to the beach. No one’s doing any tricks. But I did two comps last year.
But you won’t qualify for the tour doing two events?
I don’t want to qualify for the tour. Look how many amazing surfers have had to change their repertoire to satisfy the judges. They’re not doing rodeos on tour. It’s still just three to the beach.
What about the new judging format?
But it’s not really changed the now, has it? You know it hasn’t. Contest surfing is great is you want to make heaps of money. But I just want to be more innovative. That’s more my cup of tea.
You don’t want heaps of money?
I want to be successful doing things my own way. Guys like Tiago and Jeremy Flores, they’re great at surfing heats. They train. They’ve got a good mindset. But no one is popping in a video to watch them surf. They’re not doing anything like Julian or Jordy. But then in a heat those guys have to hold back. If you watch Dane paddle out for an hour-long freesurf, he’s going to blow your mind. But if you watch him surf a heat…well, he’ll probably still blow your mind, but he won’t make the heat.
So what do you do? Save the whales? Start a band? Pretend to be half-horse?
[chuckles] Yeah, to be a freesurf, you’ve got to have a niche. But I’ve got one. And that’s why I’m doing thing like this Damien Hirst board.
Have you actually surfed your million-dollar board?
I wish I could, but I can’t. We’re going to auction it off for charity. Raising money for Friends of the Earth Foundation.
So you are saving the dolphins. What are you gonna call your band?
Yeah, right.
Don’t you just want to find out surfing on a million dollars feels like?
I do, but how do you explain it if you snap it?

Comune // Surf's Up at Ski Beach
Sunshine and spring weather conditions were a welcome treat after the past month of heavy storms in Tahoe. The weather finally let up and COMUNE snow contributors were eager to take advantage of the conditions. The insane amount of snowfall provided unique snow features never formed before. The crew found a natural quarter pipe/hip feature as well as a few other little jibs right off the side of the road. After a few hours of digging they created a small skate park like zone for everyone to ride. A spring session wouldn’t be complete without grilling up some hot dogs and consuming copious amounts of cold beer. All the homies came out and everyone rode all day until the sun went down. It was definitely one of the most memorable days of the season.

Social Distortion - Machine Gun Blues
Social Distortion - Machine Gun Blues Lyrics
Well I'm a gangster 1934
Junkies, Winos, Pimps & Whores
And all you men, women and kids
best get out the way
I just left your town, took all your loot,
bought a pink carnation and a pinstripe suit,
a hopped-up V8 Ford and some two-tone shoes
And I'm already gone, I like the pool of the blood and sorrow,
I've got the Machine Gun Blues
I'll be outta of here for the break of dawn,
I'll hit the highway, smoke a big cigar,
got to stop and bury the cash, then get some more
There's only one thing on my mind,
that's making it across that ol' state line,
but I've a hell of avenging bullets,
waiting there for me
And I'm already gone, I've left a path of pure destruction,
I've got the Machine Gun Blues
I'm already gone, my life will soon be through,
I've got the Machine Gun Blues
I'm public enemy number one
I'm sorry for all the things that I've done
If indeed we do cross path, it's nothing personal
And I'm already gone, I've left a trail of devastation,
I've got the Machine Gun Blues
I'm already gone, my life will soon be through,
I've got the Machine Gun Blues

George Thorogood - Move It On Over Lyrics
I come in last night about half past ten,
that baby of mine wouldn't let me in
So move it on over, rock it on over,
move over little dog, the mean old dog is movin' in
She told me not to mess around,
but I done let the deal go down
Move it on over, rock it on over,
move over nice dog, the big fat dog is movin' in
She changed the lock on my back door,
now my key won't fit no more
Move it on over, rock it on over,
move over nice dog, the mean old dog is movin' in
She threw me out just as pretty as she pleased,
pretty soon I'll be scratchin' fleas
Move it on over, slide it on over,
move over nice dog, the mean old dog is movin' in
Yeah, listen to me dog before you start to whine,
that side yours and this side mine
So move it on over, rock it on over,
move over little dog, the big old dog is movin' in
Yeah, she changed the lock on my back door,
now my key won't fit no more
Move it on over, rock it on over,
move over little dog, the big old dog is movin' in
Move it on over, move it on over
Move it on over, won't'cha rock it on over
Move over cool dog, the hot dog's movin' in

Are you a Souther?
by Rob Gilley(Recently cut from the Surfer photography staff, Rob Gilley is now applying a surprising new talent for embittered, sardonic prose to the
blogosphere)
It’s not often that one word can change your life. But I have to admit that’s the case with the term, “Souther.” I was introduced to the word over 10 years ago, and I can safely say that it has had a profound effect on my behavior ever since.
Loosely defined, a Souther is an extremely shallow-minded surfer that usually lives south of Ventura, California. I say “usually” because a Souther can live anywhere. In fact, I know plenty of Southers that happen to live in Santa Cruz.
In turn, there are plenty of surfers that live below Ventura that are not Southers. For example, Skip Frye from San Diego is the polar opposite of a Souther.
So what exactly is a Souther? It’s a good question, but I’ll bet you know what I’m talking about. That buddy of yours with a great quiver but never really surfs. The friend that has a rad four-wheel drive truck but never goes to Baja. The guy who doesn’t like to camp at the beach for fear of getting sandy. The acquaintance with the whitened teeth that loves trade shows and calls everybody, “bro.”
You get the picture.
So why is it important to know what a Souther is? Aha! Because it is my contention that everybody has a little bit of Souther in them. Modern society and its trappings encourage Souther-ness to surface. Even if you live in a cave in the Pacific Northwest, I bet you have had a Souther episode.
So unless you like to be shallow and soulless, the important thing is to fight off Souther tendencies like the plague. Recognize potential Souther situations and avoid Souther behavior before it takes hold of you.
I implore you: DO NOT embrace your inner Souther.
So how do you recognize if you’ve slipped over to the dark side? Take the test below and find out.
The Great Souther Test
1. Do you have trouble sleeping before trade shows?
2. Do you hate camping?
3. Do you have shiny, white teeth?
4. Have you ever dyed your hair or frosted your tips?
5. Do you think that the ultimate two-vehicle quiver would be a Beemer and a Hummer?
6. Do you get tummy aches?
7. Have you used any of the following terms in the last week: Tavi, Cali, or Newps?
8. Do you wish to God that somebody would start a World Wave Pool Tour?
9. Do you have a rad 4WD truck or SUV, but have never really put it into 4WD?
10. Do you think that Grinch-ing is the raddest thing since tow-ats?
11. In the last year have you said to a friend, “Dude, have you seen my new clips?”
12. Have you referred to shooting with a surf photographer as, “getting some work done”?
13. Do you have trouble seeing why people get mad when you drive right behind them in the fast lane and flash your brights?
14. Is “sick” the only thing you say more than “bro”?
Answered 12 or more “yes”: Full Souther
Answered more than four “yes”: Part-time Souther
Answered more than two “yes”: Souther tendencies
Answered zero “yes”: You Live in Oregon

Until The Light Takes Us (Official Trailer)
In theaters this winter. Until The Light Takes Us tells the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-nineties when a rash of suicides, murders, and church burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine what heavy metal is and what it stands for to other musicians, artists and music fans world-wide. Until The Light Takes Us goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of "Satanists running amok in Europe" to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles and beliefs that led to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture.
To capture this on film, directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell moved to Norway and lived with the musicians for several years, building relationships that allowed them to create a surprisingly intimate portrait of this violent, but ultimately misunderstood, movement. The result is a poignant, moving story thats as much about the idea that reality is composed of whatever the most people believe, regardless of whats actually true, as it is about a music scene that blazed a path of murder and arson across the northern sky

Seven Ghosts - Indonesian Tidal Bore - Getting There
Behind the Seven Ghosts
If you're as intrigued by things like the Seven Ghosts as we are, then you'll share our enthusiasm for details. We figured there was no better way to get the whole story than to talk to two people who were on the trip, for two different perspectives. We've paraphrased and pieced-together the two different perspectives here for you: One from a non-surfer in attendance, and one from a team surfer. But we'll never tell who.
Getting There:
After a flight into Pekan Baru, the capital of Riau (which is a province on the island of Sumatra), a seven-hour drive follows. The Rip Curl crew were picked up by a guide, but had problems getting there as one of the access bridges was broken. Simultaneously, as the first crew flew and drove, a second crew (two men driving a truck carrying two jetskis), travelled all the way from Bali – an eight day journey. The gang also had three boats, which were hired from Jakarta. It took nearly a month to organise boats, skis and the whole catastrophe. Included in organisation was the acquisition of legal documents to cross certain bridges.
The Village:
The team's guide, who'd been there before, had run into trouble on his last trip. Locals became angry with him (for reasons unknown) and knifed a hole in the side of his zodiac, popping it. During the Rip Curl team's trip, they had to pay off security guards in the village, every day, so that nothing would happen to them, the skis or the boats. One of the crew was looking for a place to launch the ski and asked three locals for help – he was met with menacing snarls and was left with little choice than to offer money. Once the locals had a taste for cash, a trend developed – every day thereafter, the police would tell the crew they had to pay the men for the day's security.
The hotel the team stayed at backed onto the river and was held up by stilts. Toilet amenities consist of three squat holes that flush straight into the river. Pipes then come out of the river and fill the buckets that are used for showering. Every person, in every village, along the whole river, flushes their waste into the river. They wash their clothes in the river and shower in the river water. The water looks like Coca-Cola. "And not a Coca-Cola that's been dropped and foamed up," our source said. "A proper, flat Coca-Cola."
The Wave:
Pure perfection. The wave works every new moon and every full moon. The wave is, essentially, the product of a changing tide. Picture a normal swell, that's in fact just a rapidly-incoming tide. It begins at the ocean as a tidal wall of whitewash and rushes up-river. Only one wave comes each day and there's three good sections along the river. First the wave runs into deep water, then hits the first shallow bank and barrels. Each section is completely different. After the barrel is another fat section – at this point it's a bit more work to push through turns. It was described to us as "like a beachbreak, except perfect." Being in the right spot at each section is very difficult, as the river's so wide. The left/right peak you see in the videos is the best section. From the village the team were staying in, the peak section is 17km up-river. After the wave closes-out on the peak section, it reforms. The team met a problem at this section on the second day, when one of the boats hit the sand bar, stopped, then took the full force of the wave. From first section to last, by the time the team'd finished surfing, they were 45 minutes' ski ride up-river. The team would surf for one hour each day, which is how long the window lasted. Around the new moon, the wave breaks for four or five days in a row.
Daily Routine:
Each day, the crew would wake up, eat, organise themselves and get out to the first break at nine or 10am. Then they'd wait. The wave'd surge through the river and they'd meet it at the first section. Things were difficult, because there were five surfers – our source says it might've been better-suited for two. There's only one chance each day. The jetski drivers need to be completely on point for two reasons: Firstly, because if someone falls off the back, the ski needs to pick 'em up and get back around in front – trying to beat the wave up-river and get far enough in front of it to set up again. Secondly, because they gotta dodge floating logs and trees in the process.
Quote from our sources:
Like everything in life, good comes with the bad. The wave, as you can see from the video, can offer the ride of a lifetime. But nothing's perfect, and you gots to deal with shit before you get to the glory.
Anonymous non-surfer: "I'd never go back to that crocodile-infested, staph-breeding shit hole in my entire life. There's fucken eight-foot crocodiles in the water. We saw the trail… the wake of a crocodile. Then the guy on the jetski just went directly over it. I got a fucken staph infection on my ankle from the water there, which I've had for two weeks now."
Anonymous surfer: "It was mind-blowing, just so, so perfect. Such an interesting place to surf. It was the best wave I've ever ridden in my life. Actually, it was the best thing I've ever done in my life."

Rip Curl Tip 2 Tip: The Seven Ghosts
Anyone who's ever stepped on a surfboard can appreciate Rip Curl's most recent Search trip. Deep in the Indonesian jungle, Bruno Santos, Dean Brady, Tyler Larronde, Oney Antwar and Tom Curren found a tidal bore that local villagers call the Seven Ghosts River. When it was discovered the that the bore would be turning out it's best waves in 19 years, they moved on it. The clips you see here are the result. Tom Curren described this as the "Most amazing Search trip in 20 years."

DRAIN - A DOGBOWL SHORT directed by JAKE JANISSE from DRAIN - A DOGBOWL SHORT on Vimeo.
THIS HISTORIC 8MM FOOTAGE OF DOGTOWN'S FOUNDING MEMBERS, WAS CAPTURED IN THE SPRING OF 1977 BY WAYNE BABCOCK. WAYNE HAS NEVER RELEASED THIS FOOTAGE NOR HAS HE SHARED HIS VINTAGE DOGTOWN SKATEBOARD COLLECTION WITH THE PUBLIC, BOTH HAVE BEEN DONATED EXCLUSIVELY IN SUPPORT OF THIS PROJECt.
The Dog Bowl, originally known only to the most hardcore DogTown crew, was located in Northern Santa Monica - The Dogtown crew had their own pool that they could skate in peace. "Dino's Dog Bowl" was shortened to just "The Dog Bowl." A teenager with terminal cancer asked his father to drain the family pool on their huge estate overlooking The Brentwood Country Club Golf Course. Some of the most famous photographs in skateboarding were shot at the Dog Bowl. Tony Alva is credited with doing the first front side aerials at the pool in the fall of 1977. It was named "The Dog Bowl" because there were dogs always hanging out at the pool. On any given day over the summer of 1977 most of the entire DogTown crew were at the pool. Some of the best skating sessions EVER took place there.

The Vandals - Let The Bad Times Roll
The Vandals - Let The Bad Times Roll Lyrics
For all those that are feeling way too fed up inside
Now here's a celebration of failure and losing
Like to put a shout out to all y'all far and wide
Sorry people but this is the way it's gotta be
I know, I know, I know, I know
we are pushing the parameters to a brand new low
The end is near there's lots to fear
No such thing as a good day is what I'm told
Let the bad times roll
The grass is never greener on the other side
I'll stay right here and frolic in the dirt and gravel
Where's the love in this room? I feel teary eyed.
Between you and me I don't think it's ever gonna change
Descend, rear end, offend a friend
It's wise of you to run and hide from what's around the bend
The end is near there's lots to fear
No such thing as a free lunch is what I'm told
Let the band times roll
Up to me I'll embrace them happily
let you people know I'm not foolin'
come take a ride with me down to Riverside
show you what it's like to be coolin'
Life's gotta be a little better overseas
whwre everyone's drivin' a Mercedes
unsatisfied with my mailorder bride
so much for my last attempt with the ladies
Listen to nobody this is the way I think
Tell 'em all you're gonna live at least until you're forty
Just be glad you're only one shade of blue in the face
Wake up smell the shit and think that everything is great
I know, I know, I know, I know
we are pushing the parameters to a brand new low
The end is near there's lots to fear
No such thing as a good day is what I'm told
Let the bad times roll

The Filming of Stay Gold yielded a ton gigs logged on Jon Miner’s hard drives. Only a small percentage of that footage has been seen to this day, the cream of the crop. Lucky for us, Jon has decided to dig deep into those hard drives and cut together some never-before-seen footage, second angles, slams, and random shenanigans that went on during the filming of Stay Gold.

Bad Religion - American Jesus
Bad Religion - American Jesus Lyrics
I don't need to be a global citizen
Because I'm blessed by nationality
I'm member of a growing populace
We enforce our popularity
There are things that seem to pull us under
And there are things that drag us down
But there's a power and a vital presence
Thats lurking all around
We've got the american Jesus
See him on the interstate
We've got the american Jesus
He helped build the president's estate
I feel sorry for the earth's population
'Cuz so few live in the U.S.A.
At least the foreigners can copy our morality
They can visit but they cannot stay
Only precious few can garner the prosperity
It makes us walk with renewed confidence
We've got a place to go when we die
And the architect resides right here
We've got the american Jesus
Bolstering national faith
We've got the american Jesus
Overwhelming millions every day
He's the farmers barren fields (in god)
The force the army wields (we trust)
The expession in the faces (because)
Of the starving millions (he's one of us)
The power of the man (break down)
He's the fuel that drives the clan (cave in)
He's the motive and conscience (we can)
Of the murderer (take in our sins)
He's the preacher on t.v. (strong heart)
The false sincerity (too high)
He form letter that's written (an infinite)
By the big computers (kind)
The nuclear bombs (you lose)
And the kids with no moms (we win)
And i'm fearful that (he is)
he's inside me (our champion)
We've got the american jesus
See him on the interstate
We've got the american jesus
Exercisin' his authority
We've got the american jesus
Bolstering national faith
We've got the american jesus
Overwhelming millions every day
(yeah!)
One nation under God
One nation under God

Etam Paese's sound tip - GOD - My pal (1988)
GOD - My pal Lyrics
being a party head
is something I could never do
I don’t like no one
but except from you
you’re my only friend
you don’t even like me
you’re my only friend
you don’t even like me
come over to my house
I’ve got a friend for you
you’re not gonna come
but I want you to
you’re my only friend
you don’t even like me
you’re my only friend
you don’t even like me
